How Many Hours of Home Care Does My Parent Actually Need?
- Live Life Well
“How many hours do we actually need?” is one of the first questions families ask once they've decided to look into home care — it's usually one of the first things families ask us at Live Life Well too. The honest answer is: it depends entirely on what your parent can and can't safely do alone, which is a more specific question than it might sound.
Start With Daily Living Tasks, Not a Number
Rather than guessing at a total number of hours, it helps to walk through the specific tasks of daily life and be honest about which ones have become difficult. These generally fall into two categories:
Personal Care Tasks
- Bathing and personal hygiene
- Dressing
- Moving safely — getting in and out of bed, a chair, or around the home
- Eating and swallowing safely
- Toileting and continence
Daily Household and Life Tasks
- Preparing meals
- Managing medications
- Light housekeeping
- Getting to appointments
- Managing finances or paperwork
A parent who needs help with one or two of these might genuinely be fine with a few hours a week. A parent struggling with several — especially personal care tasks — usually needs daily support, not occasional check-ins. When our team at Live Life Well does an in-home assessment, this is essentially the framework we're working through with you.
Other Questions Worth Asking
- Is your parent alone for long stretches during the day, and is that actually safe right now?
- Are family visits currently covering gaps that a professional caregiver should be covering instead?
- Has anything happened recently — a fall, a hospital stay, a new diagnosis — that's changed what's needed?
- Is the current level of support sustainable for the people providing it, or is everyone already stretched thin?
That last question matters more than families often expect. “How many hours does Mom need” and “how many hours can our family actually sustain” are two different questions, and the gap between them is usually where a provider like Live Life Well becomes necessary.
Hours Aren't Fixed — and Shouldn't Be
Care needs change, sometimes gradually and sometimes suddenly. A schedule that works today may need adjusting in three months, and that's normal, not a sign anything went wrong with the original plan. We build every care plan at Live Life Well to flex as needs shift, rather than locking families into a fixed package that stops fitting.
